
Afterward, Maurice feels unwell in the presence of both Alec and Anne, Clive's wife. A cricket match takes place, gentlemen and servants, and Alec is captain of one team. At dawn Alec Scudder climbs down the ladder and returns to work on the estate. That night Maurice wakes suddenly, goes to the window, and calls out "Come!" Alec climbs a ladder and enters Maurice's bedroom window.Īlec and Maurice fall asleep in each other's arms. After each apologizes, they talk about Alec's plan to emigrate to Argentina. Maurice then encounters the Durhams' gamekeeper, Alec Scudder, whom Maurice finds arrogant-slow to respond when summoned and snobbish about accepting tips-and attractive. After a period of estrangement between them, Clive is glad Maurice accepts his marriage. Desperate to stop feeling attracted to men, Maurice unsuccessfully consults two doctors.

He then hears Clive is engaged to marry Anne Woods. When he returns to England, he tells Maurice again he has become "normal," though Maurice is skeptical.

While there, he writes Maurice to say he is now "normal" and no longer loves men. They begin careers: Maurice a stockbroker, Clive a lawyer.Ĭlive travels to Greece alone. Their relationship is not sexual, and they avoid speaking of love. They have a joyous final year at Cambridge and then travel to Italy together. During summer vacation, Clive convinces Maurice to apologize and thus be reinstated at Cambridge. As a result, Maurice is suspended the next day.

Maurice and Clive skip lectures to ride through the countryside on Maurice's motorcycle.

After three unhappy weeks apart, Maurice climbs into Clive's bedroom window. When Clive declares his love, Maurice rebuffs him. At England's University of Cambridge at the turn of the 20th century, Maurice Hall develops an affectionate friendship with fellow student Clive Durham.
